There’s Much More to Studying at Leeds Met than Just Sitting in Class!

I’m a Leeds Met BA Design student and I want to share my tips for studying in the UK. How to make the most of your studies using the resources and opportunities available? Firstly don’t miss out on the Welcome Week! That’s how you find out about all the resources, facilities, extracurricular activities, social events, sport clubs etc. and that’s how you make friends. Next thing you’ll find is how good the library is! I know how it sound but read on...

Leeds Met has a great 24/7 library that’s open every day of the year. On busy days (like dissertation submission week) the library can be packed to the brim, even the random computer booths dotted around campus are occupied but there are hundreds of these around the campus so you’ll probably find one in the less known campus buildings. A great help is that you can work in the library overnight. I’ve done it a few times myself. Design students have a secret location that’s inaccessible to the others… the City Campus Library Building has a fourth floor. We have access to large printers (homemade A1 posters anyone?), 3D printers and such. The software suite is amazing too! The entire Adobe suite, software engineering tools, architecture tools, 3D modelling, sound editing, etc. You name it, they probably have it.

Another thing Leeds Met’s library provides that’s really really cool are AV loans, where you are able to borrow cameras, tripods, microphones, voice recorders, even televisions, etc. This allowed me and a lot of students to get hands on knowledge (the staff are happy to help) and try some amateur videography ourselves, even if you’re not a multimedia course student! HOT TIP: borrow the camera on Thursday, you’ll effectively get the camera for two extra days because the weekends don’t count!

If you need help with things like essay writing, IT, maths, personal development etc. you will find Skills4Learning really useful. They offer online resources and workshops you can attend. If you have a business idea you’d like to explore then the Enterprise Academy is perfect for you! To find out more start here. You can also read my blog.
