What else do you get from a summer job?

Birds are singing, the lakes are warm and the sun is shining bright.

Summer is fast approaching and many of you will be looking forward to post-secondary education – some of you with Laurentian University! The summer is an excellent time for students to relax from their studies, undertake special projects, or travel with various organizations.

It’s also an excellent time to work.

Doesn't that sound appealing; working from 9:00am to 3:00pm during your summer? Many students will suck their teeth and drag their feet at their jobs this summer because they’d rather be doing something else with their time. The reality is, if you need to work for your education, you’re better off embracing the experience and doing your absolute best. In addition to the one thing you absolutely need (money) you non-foot-draggers will earn respect and learn the basic skills needed in careers. Respect translates into excellent references, job referrals, more responsibility and the possibility of a new position the following summer. Acquiring the basic skills needed for the work environment translates to maturity and confidence when looking for new avenues of revenue.

Remember, you have two choices when it comes to work; do it, or don’t do it. Be prepared to reap the rewards from either choice!
