On the job hunt but don’t know where to start? This article is for you!

There are things you can do to ensure you land that summer job you’ve been dreaming about all school year.

For starters, master the art of maintaining a kick-butt resumé and cover letter (CL). Once you lay the foundation, it only needs a few minor revisions here and there. Invest now!

When you’re writing your CL and resumé:

  • Make it company-specific and know the position you’re applying for.
  • Try to address your CL to the actual person that is hiring rather than ‘to hiring manager.’
  • Explain how you are the right candidate for the job by outlining what required skills and qualifications you possess.
  • Proofread!
  • Design and customize your CL and resumé (but not too much) so they stand out.

Now, for the interview…

Prepare yourself – this is imperative! You can never invest enough time in getting to know the company you’re interviewing with. While you’re at it, check out the interviewer’s LinkedIn profile and get a feel for them too! Brownie points, anyone?!

Next, practice being polite, polished and professional. First impressions matter. The first 30 seconds of the interview are the most important. Showcase your personality confidently. It wouldn’t hurt to rehearse at home either.

Emphasize your potential. Let the interviewer know why they need you and what you’re going to bring to their business.

Don’t…

  • Slouch, smoke, lie, swear, be late etc. (DUH!).
  • Wear excessive make-up, piercings or chipped nail polish.
  • Criticize former employers or colleagues.
  • Discuss controversial subjects like religion or politics.

Lastly, make sure to thank the employer for taking time out of their busy schedule to interview you.

Good luck! Just remember…you’ve got this!
