Get a job. You’ve probably heard that a time or two, but it’s not always that easy. Finding meaningful, enjoyable employment can be tough—especially as a student. Enter co-operative education. Co-op programs exist at many post-secondary institutions. Students alternate periods of academic study, with paid work terms alongside industry professionals, gaining experience and connecting their education with relevant work experience.

Completing a co-op program can help you boost your résumé, network with professionals, provide you with beneficial experience and skills, and lets you earn an income while you learn. In addition, students may be offered ongoing work once their co-op term is completed.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University currently offers a co-op option in 10 different degree and diploma programs. Students enrolled in certain programs in business, science, and arts have the opportunity to apply for positions that connect their studies with their future careers.

Co-op at KPU is set up to provide students with as much support at possible. Those who enroll in co-operative education take courses that cover writing résumés and cover letters, interviewing, goal setting, and analyzing job markets. Once students have completed their first work term, they then assist individuals who are new to co-op by mentoring and coaching them throughout the process of securing their first work term placement. During work terms, students have regular contact with their instructors who are able to provide feedback, answer questions, and handle any issues or concerns that may arise. Following successful completion of a co-op term students reflect on their experiences and present their conclusions to fellow classmates to get a better understanding of how their education relates to their future career.

Take a break from school; go to work.
