Make the most of your summer break, and use it to gain experiences and establish connections! To do this, there are a variety of paths you can take, from becoming involved with Co-op, finding a job, and/or by volunteering. The University of Northern British Columbia and the city of Prince George can help point you in the right direction – check out some suggestions below:

  • Co-op: Did you know UNBC has a Co-Operative education program? By participating in Co-op, students can put their academic knowledge into action through relevant work experience! Co-op can also be a means to contribute to your education costs, as it is paid employment. But remember – you must apply to the Co-op program before you begin your intended work term – for further information, feel free to contact our Student Career Centre at hirestudents@unbc.ca.
  • Summer Jobs: Need help applying for a summer job? The Student Career Centre can help you with your cover letter and resume. This centre also lists current job postings, so be sure to check the postings regularly for jobs from potential employers! The student job board includes positions at UNBC, as well as prospective employers from Prince George and beyond.
  • Volunteering: Prince George has a wonderful volunteers listing for anyone interested in looking to gain experience in a particular field. Volunteer Prince George is a registered non-profit charitable organization that will be your one-stop shop for everything volunteer related in Prince George. Volunteer with the upcoming 2015 Canada Winter Games, the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, the Huble Homestead, the Two River’s Gallery – there is no shortage of opportunities for experiences. Remember - volunteering is a great way to meet people and make connections, and allows you to develop skills you may not have had the chance to otherwise do!

Whichever path you choose, remember that every experience counts. Whether it guides you to your future career, or provides you with temporary employment, it allows you to gain valuable skills. So, make the most of your summer! Utilize the UNBC Career Centre, and be sure to check out Volunteer Prince George! And, if you have any questions along the way, please feel free contact us at unbc4u@unbc.ca – we would be happy to help!
