Between exams, summer trip plans, and daydreams of next year’s possibilities, are you thinking about how you will spend your summer? Working can be a great complement to your studies, help you with tuition payments, and give you skills you can use later in your career.

Book an interview with your resume. Cast a critical eye on your resume: is it simple and straightforward, or busy and filled with distracting fonts and misleading errors? Is it focused towards the intended position? Take the opportunity to see a career counselor at your student services department; Nipissing University has a dedicated team of staff members onsite for career advice and help, as well as a team of student resume experts, who run workshops and provide one-on-one support to get that resume in shape for application time.

Start your search close to home. Nipissing has summer jobs and research assistantships in nearly every department. Either visiting the website or doing your research in-person a few months ahead of time means you have time to prepare for the deadlines and submit a quality application that will make employers sit up and take notice. Volunteering at clubs and events, even sports on campus will get you involved in student life; taking part in events means you have an ear to the ground when it comes to research opportunities, paid work, or other valuable experiences.

Keep an open mind. Search for a job related to your field of study, but consider every option. You never know what opportunities might arise out of a situation. A summer job helping prepare for conferences in Residence could translate into a position planning and coordinating those events upon graduation. Nipissing offers the full student experience; explore our student blog, check out our programs, and see why you belong at Nipissing University!
