Don’t let a closed door stop you from reaching your goals. An alternative to pursuing your educational goals could be simply applying to a related program; create an unofficial official back-up plan and consider all your options. If you are interested in a career in social work, your choices aren’t limited to professional programs. Nipissing University’s Social Welfare and Social Development program offers a fascinating alternative. As the only program of its kind currently offered in Canada, this program combines knowledge and skills students can use in social work and other careers.

The program focuses on contemporary issues affecting society; violence, poverty, crime, and addictions on both a national and international scale. In addition to time spent in the classroom, students can also complete a Community Service Learning (CSL) course to gain experience in the working world. This program is a great stepping-stone to graduate and professional programs, including a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). This program offers other opportunities besides a career in social work, so for those unsure what career they wish to pursue, a flexible degree may unlock a range of choice careers.

Even when hard work and luck spark success in your life, don’t throw out the backup plans; even successful athletes have planned alternatives to pursue aside from their sports careers. Talk to a career counselor about pathways you can pursue after graduation, research programs, or set your sights on doing something fun.

If your fall plans get sidetracked, don’t panic. Nipissing University, among other universities, allows students to apply to many of the 28 undergraduate programs and begin their studies in both fall and winter semesters.
