Ever heard of the Mark Twain quote, “plan for the future because that's where you are going to spend the rest of your life”? Though short, it’s a loaded quote that can arouse concern. How should you plan for the future? What will you do to get where you want to be? Where do you even want to be?

Rest assured, these questions are not something that should be considered scary, but rather, is something that needs to be embraced! Career development is a lifelong process that is shaped by seeking out new experiences, and finding out what interests you the most. As you experience new things, you’ll begin to find out what excites you, and what makes you passionate.

At the University of Northern British Columbia, we can help you discover your career path, and the tools you need to succeed. Our Student Career Centre is a wonderful resource for students to use to help determine which career path they are interested in. With cover letter and resume workshops, employer recruiting and information sessions, as well as semi-annual career fairs, the Student Career Centre can help you meet potential employers from a wide range of fields. This centre also lists current Job Postings, so be sure to check the postings regularly for jobs from potential employers!

The Student Career Centre also offers Co-operative Education for undergraduate students. Not only does co-op allow students to put their academic knowledge into action through relevant work experience, but it also contributes to education costs with paid employment. Co-op helps students be more competitive in the job market, and provides students with opportunities to build valuable contacts with employers!

Not sure what excites you? Don’t stress! Contact Maria at hirestudents@unbc.ca, and take the Personality Dimensions Quiz. This short, 30 minute quiz will provide you with valuable information about your personality type, and helps you discover careers and occupations most suited to your personality.

We encourage all of our students to utilize the resources at the Career Centre. And, if you have any questions along the way, please feel free contact us at unbc4u@unbc.ca – we would be happy to help!
