Canadian student Elaine Chin has just won a scholarship to the top-ranked Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland for an MBA in International Hospitality and Service Industries Management, combined with a Master of Advanced Studies and Leadership.

For bachelor courses, there are three types of scholarship: Presidential (10%, 15%, 20%), Alumni and Children of Alumni (10%), and Hotelier / Hospitality (10%). Postgraduate scholarships vary.

Elaine’s top tips:

Apply. Even if you think you may not win one, apply. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Research. Find out as much as possible about Glion and the course. The best way to do this, is to join the school Facebook group and read the Webzine. Get as much information as possible, so your application is as informed as possible.

Question yourself. Do some self-reflection about why you want this career. Glion scholarships are generous; they give them out carefully. They definitely need to see your commitment to hospitality and drive and ambition to succeed.

A scholar’s life

‘When you win a scholarship, a lot is expected of you. Academic performance aside, being a scholar gives me opportunity to venture out into this world, to find my own path and reassure myself that it’s the right one.

There is no doubt that the pressure is on you to succeed, though being a scholar also means people will look up to you for ideas or help, propelling you to stand out as a leader.

The feeling of achievement is indescribable.

But the first step of applying means you are already half-way there. Ambition takes over once you obtain it and you realize how it opens up doors that you didn’t even know existed. It’s all worth it.

I will always be a scholar, and a Glion scholar at that. And this gives me a double cutting edge in my professional career.

Good Luck! See you on campus soon.’
