Being active in university life and the community you live in is a vital component in your university education. There is no better advice than what Lakehead University students could give you, so we asked a few of them why and how they become involved, and here is what they had to say:

Student Life
“Outside of class I am very active because I want to balance out my studies. I enjoy going to the gym (which is included in my student fees). In the winter I go snowboarding and snow shoeing. In the summer I enjoy hiking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, travelling, and playing soccer and volleyball. I can do it all either on or close to campus.”
–Allison Winmill, Forestry student

“Student life at Lakehead can only be described as awesome. I'm a part of the Equestrian team. I have met countless new friends and get to have new experiences that I would not get if I didn't involve myself—like travelling to Minnesota and Wisconsin to compete.”
–Nerhys Hall, Music student

Why Get Involved
“Campus life at Lakehead is amazing. There's a large variety of clubs, sports, and activities for everyone's own unique interests. There are also lots of events organized by Residence, The Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) and other clubs, which are designed for the same goal: to help students identify and relate with their school community.”
–Anthony Jeethan, Pyschology and Biology student

“The best part about getting involved at Lakehead is that it is so easy. Everyone is extremely welcoming and truly wants to create an enriching environment at the school. It was so important to me to get outside my tiny bubble of friends and meet a variety of people from different backgrounds. Doing so, I have become a Director of Lakehead Student Alumni and a Student Ambassador to Lakehead. I have to do a lot of planning to balance this and my school work, but it’s always worth it.”
–Sneha Makkar, Arts & Science / Concurrent Education Student

How to Get Involved
“I’m a member of Lakehead’s Association of Biology Students (LABS). Throughout the year we host a wide range of events – from an evening of watching “The Big Bang Theory” to playing laser tag on a weekend. This group allows me to meet other students in the same program as well as professors in Biology.”
–Megan Westlund, Biology student

“Because I loved residence so much I wanted help provide other students with a similar experience so I became a house president in second year and now in third year I am a resident assistant.”
–Jess Warden, Kinesiology, Concurrent Education student

Services and Resources
“My student career was enriched by being a member of the LEAD volunteer program through the Student Success Centre (SSC). The SSC is an office staffed with amazing people to assist students with all their questions and make the university a more understandable place to live, learn and explore.”
–Sarah Scott, Natural Sciences student

“I used many hours of the free math tutoring service available to students. I also took advantage of the writing center that helped me polish my essays and assignments, as well as the Student Success Center whose seminars and supportive staff answered all my questions about my course and program. University is a huge step after high school, but everything about Lakehead made the transition easier.”
–Jocelyn Bel, Applied Bio-Molecular Science student
