Open door policy improves performance and well being

There’s no doubt about it, medical school is tough! Not only do you have to get used to the sheer volume of information doled out on a daily basis, but you also have to keep up with a rigorous testing schedule. That, coupled with moving away from home can seem daunting.

St. Helen University understands, and, as a result, places heavy emphasis on the student experience.

“We have purposefully created an environment where students are our focus. We value their feedback as critical to the development of the institution,” Academic Dean Dr. Richard Van-West Charles said.

The university has an open door policy that encourages timely and open communication, and an Academic Mentor system, via which students are assigned to faculty members who will consult with them on a variety of issues, and monitor their academic and social progress.

The students have welcomed the experience.

“What made me love this school is the way the faculty has a personal stake in your success,” Pre-Medicine student Loudie Noezile said. “Other schools may be motivated by figures and may not be as invested in the success of the student, but this school is structured in a way that is very accommodating. The lecturers take time to explain the material so that you understand; and because you have more one-on-one time with your professors, there is more of an opportunity to grasp the concepts and revise the material.”

Adding to SHU’s appeal are small class sizes, the use of state-of-the-art technology and learning tools, plastinated specimens, the latest in simulation technology and the provision of all required texts and reference material, all included in the cost of tuition.

SHU is also committed to faculty development, ensuring that lecturers have access to the most current instructional and assessment techniques in medical education.
