Learning outside class happens in Student Life!

I often tell students that during my time at school, although I received my education in classrooms -my on-Campus activities was where I gained the most wisdom and knowledge. Campus activities can greatly enrich your schooling experience – whether it’s trying out a new sport, developing a skill or making new friends. These are great opportunities to make connections, bolster your CV and fine-tune interpersonal and leadership skills. Your school should have a resource board or website that displays the different activities available to students. Although our school is small and programs are condensed, we still have a Student Council that encourage students to take on leadership roles and regular Campus Life activities that encourage teamwork and fun. For example – we recently had a Gingerbread House competition where classes decorate delicious houses and wow! They did an amazing job! Not only did students get a well-deserved break, but they also enjoyed socializing and working with each other in a non-academic way. Of course the free lunch prize helped motivate their creativity… We also have cultural days that showcase the diversity of our student body. One of my favourite moments last year was watching our South Asian students explain to their peers the different array of desserts and snacks at our Diwali event.

Clubs, events, associations, groups and student unions are a great way to complement your academic growth – with personal and professional growth. It’s never too late to join in – take this opportunity in the new year to try something new!
