Getting involved is a very important part of the university experience. Extra-curricular activities make the university experience more enjoyable especially when you are dealing with a lot of homework and you need a way to take a break. Don’t wait for opportunities to get involved to come to you. Be proactive and get informed about what sort of clubs, committees and sports teams are available. Ask around and take notice of advertisements around campus and online. Find at least one or even a few that interest you and show up to the first meeting to try it out. Clubs, committees and teams are eager for new members to join them so don’t let it intimidate you.

In my own experience, I was hesitant about joining the Student Legislative Council at first because of the time commitment but I’m glad I did. As a Student Representative on Student Council I help organize and put on events for all of the students at the university. St. Mary’s University College is a caring atmosphere that is encouraging to be a part of. Joining Student Council has helped me feel like I am an integral part of the community and meet new friends.

There are many other clubs and sports teams at our university that are an important part of our community including Social Justice Club, Historical Society, Cross Country Running Team, Basketball Team and Recreational Soccer and Volleyball Teams. There is no doubt in my mind that if you reach out and get informed you will find the right fit for you. When you find one that interests you then hold on to it because who knows where it will take you but there is a good chance it will help frame you.
