There’s no doubt that studying abroad is an incredible life experience—one that will open you to new cultures, ideas, and ways of thinking. And in today’s Internet-powered world, studying abroad offers another major benefit: It can help you compete in the global market, making you more attractive to grad schools and employers.

When you’re researching schools, look for those with study abroad programs that give you experience working on real-world projects in a global context. Like NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) in San Diego. As part of Laureate International Universities, a network of more than 70 universities around the world, NSAD offers study abroad programs that emphasize project work in architecture and design.

A study abroad opportunity is integrated into two NSAD degree programs: the Bachelor of Interior Design and Bachelor of Product Design. In their junior year—at no additional tuition cost—students spend a term at Domus Academy, a prestigious graduate design school in Milan, Italy. During the remainder of the four-year program in San Diego, visiting faculty from Domus and international design experts create a global campus experience at NSAD and prepare students to become designers in a global market.

Students in NSAD’s Digital Media Arts Program can choose from several exciting opportunities abroad. They can spend a term at the award-winning Media Design School in Auckland, New Zealand, which offers cutting-edge programs in animation, VFX, gaming, and creative advertising. Or they can study at one of NSAD’s sister institutions in Italy, China, Peru, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, or Istanbul.

NewSchool also offers summer sessions abroad—like studying Baroque architecture in Rome; design and architecture in Copenhagen; and illustration, photography, or film in Berlin. Being immersed in the culture, art, and architecture you’re studying makes learning come alive in a way that doesn’t happen in the classroom. What better way to earn college credit than studying abroad?
