Life-changing, mind-opening, inspiring…these are just a few of the words Lakehead University students have used to describe their experiences on an international exchange. Taking the opportunity to study and travel abroad while in university is more than just an adventure—it will blow your learning experience wide open. Rather than just books and classes, your education on an exchange will come from living in another country, meeting people from all over the world, perhaps learning a new language, and gaining a perspective about other cultures. An international exchange will not only enrich your degree, it will strengthen your resume.

Lakehead students who have maintained a stable academic average can take part in an exchange in their second or third year. While abroad, students do not pay any extra tuition, simply their Lakehead tuition fees as if they were at home. Some of the countries Lakehead students have travelled to include Australia, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Singapore, and Sweden. Here is what a couple students have to say about their experience:

“I learned a great deal about glacial geology on my exchange in Norway. But meeting so many people from around the world, learning about who they are and the places they come from, and participating with the community around me – that’s what really caused me to think about who I am, where I should change, and where I should make the world change.”
– Allen Wywrot, Geology student on exchange in Norway

“My exchange year was the most eye-opening experience of my life. It gave me a truly global outlook by exposing me to a different culture and language (and the cultures and languages of those also on exchange). That’s an experience that’s not available just anywhere.”
–Tim Juvshik, Philosophy student on exchange in France
