It's the time of the year when you’re probably hunting for the best place to start your post-secondary education journey. There are so many schools and programs out there – it can be overwhelming!

"When applying for post- secondary schools the main thing you should consider are skillsets you will be graduating with and where they can take you,” says Anna Mielnik, third-year Seneca College Fire Protection Engineering Technology student. “More options may come along the way, but setting a general goal for your studies is a great start.”

You don’t have to wait until the fall to start school; you can apply to start many of Seneca’s programs in January.

When applying for college here are some things to consider:

  • Proximity of the school to your home
  • Other credential options the school may offer in your profession that can be attained concurrently with your degree, diploma, certificate or graduate certificate
  • Experiential learning options such as co-ops, internships or field placements
  • Campus layout

Having some kind of hands-on experience, extra specialization or industry certifications can give you a competitive edge after graduation.

Now in her third year and set to graduate in April, with sights set on a career as a fire prevention officer or fire safety consultant, Mielnik says she is really happy she applied to the program. This past summer, she took advantage of the paid co-op placement opportunity and spent it working in fire prevention at the Toronto Transit Commission.

It’s important to do your research to ensure you’re selecting the right program, at the right college for you.

“Go to the campus and walk around, talk to the teachers and program co-ordinators, ask questions,” says Mielnik.

Interested students can attend Seneca’s Open House on Saturday, November 23. It’s a great chance to meet faculty, students and staff, find about our programs, and take a campus tour.

Following a few of these steps should make the application process effortless.
