Applying to Universities and Colleges is a step-by-step process that requires you to be a smart consumer – you need to know what is available and then compare different products. The very first step to applying is knowing what program you are interested in. This narrows the field substantially, and will prepare you for the application process. For me, I wanted to study Food and Nutrition and I knew Brescia University College was one of the few schools in Ontario that is accredited by the professional association, Dietitians of Canada (DC). So I knew I needed to narrow my search in this province to three universities.

The second step is to look at the University websites for details on what pre-requisites will be needed for your program. Many Ontario high school applicants will need the standard minimum of six Grade 12 U or M courses with ENG4U as a requirement, while some programs will include specific Grade 12U courses. If you don’t have the required courses, you can always take them in summer school, or even take an extra semester of high school to meet the requirements. It is worth it in the long run to study something that you are passionate about.

The third step may be the most confusing and time-consuming – applying to your school(s) of choice. However, this does not have to be such an intimidating process. With the help of your high school guidance counsellor, friends and family, and Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) the process is quite straightforward. While OUAC handles all your Ontario applications, if you wish to apply outside of Ontario, just visit the university website and fill in their online application.

Finally, it is important to remember the deadlines – make a special note on your calendar of the date that you must submit your university applications. One last piece of advice before you apply is to be aware of different scholarships and bursaries that are available and take the time to apply for them. You never know what you could be eligible for! Remember … just put one foot in front of the other and you will get there one step at a time.
