The average Canadian with a postsecondary education can earn, on average, 75 per cent more than someone who only has a high school diploma – so it’s not surprising that applications to colleges and universities continue to increase every year.

Standing out in this highly competitive environment can help you get into the school or program you want. So how do you make sure you get noticed?

  1. Stay organized. Keep track of all the requirements – like essays, portfolio submissions or pre-testing info – for each program you’re applying to in separate folders, either online or in a physical file folder. Although most parts of the application process are automated, failing to send in supplementary material can delay – or eliminate – your application. Keep a checklist of everything you need to submit, along with important deadlines.
  2. Accentuate the positive. If you have to submit a portfolio, resume or essay, make sure you highlight all your accomplishments – volunteer work, paid work, awards won or interesting experiences all help you stand out from the crowd. Make sure that your essay doesn’t sound canned or fake – be authentic and real, and your personality will shine through. And, most importantly, have someone proofread everything you submit.
  3. Get in touch. Book a campus tour. Get in touch with the person who’s in charge of the program you’re interested in. Chances are, you’ll find out some useful information along the way.
