Before choosing a university, there are two essential elements to consider: Research and Visits.

Start by visiting university websites and request information. Then attend school fairs to tour their facilities and meet with current student and faculty.

Here are some key points to consider during your research and discovery process:

Accreditation

Who accredits the university and to what level? Accreditation can impact program quality, recognition in other countries and credit transfers. Schools can be accredited at different levels from diplomas, degrees or master levels and some use third part providers to offer degrees and master programs.

Programs

What kind of programs do you like and would it lead to a career that would interest you? If you have two or three programs you are interested in then research the universities that are known for being leaders in that industry.

Location

Are you looking for an international location or are you looking to stay close to home? Keep in mind that studying abroad can build your maturity, multicultural skills and language skills. An international location is also essential if you plan to have a global career.

Career Preparation

Does the program offer any professional training or internships? What are the placements rates like and what resources do they offer to get you that first job? Internships and part time jobs in your career field are great ways to build your CV before graduation.

Student life

What is it like to live and study on that campus? What sports and student groups are available? This is one area where a visit is really essential. If you cannot make the trip, then look to online resources like student blogs, Facebook or virtual tours. These are a great way to interact with current students on campus.

In the end it all comes down to you, your goals and how to plan to achieve them. It is a big decision but the more research and visits you do, the better the decision process will be.
