It’s not just which university; it’s what’s best for you! Don’t start searching post-secondary destinations based on rankings or prestige. Look first for a place that is going to make you happy and enable you to achieve success.

At Thompson Rivers University, we think a smaller, less expensive university located in the heart of a great small city is the ideal place for students from smaller communities, so give an honest answer to these important questions.

How much can I afford? Without counting on scholarships, know how much you can afford. If you’re leaving home, include the costs of living and compare the total cost of different universities to what you have available. At TRU in Kamloops, the cost can be much less than one in a big city.

What’s my career objective? If you know, find all the options; don’t make the mistake of thinking there’s only one way to get there. If you don’t, you want to be where you can explore careers. TRU is the most comprehensive university in Canada, with many unique programs.

Will I be successful in a lecture hall of 300? Students from smaller high schools going to large universities can become anonymous in a 300-seat classroom. University is also about connecting with faculty and fellow students;at TRU you know your professors by name and there are no 300-seat classes.

What do I like to do, beyond the classroom? “Partying” is not the right answer, but university life isn’t all lectures and homework either. The location of a university campus can limit your options if it’s far removed from the local community. TRU is literally minutes away from everything in town, and less than an hour from a world-class ski hill, if that’s your weekend passion.
