As a student at Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa, you do most of your studying on your feet, in the kitchen!

Preparing for an exam at Le Cordon Bleu will have you grocery shopping, timing how fast you can bake a cake, and asking classmates to taste your risotto. Here are five tips that help our students study:

1.  Practice at home.

The best way to perfect a skill is practice. We give our students a complete kit of professional knives and other tools on their first day. These kits come in handy when you need to work on a challenging technique or repeat a recipe at home.

2. Use open lab sessions.

During “open lab sessions”, our students can practice in the professionally-equipped teaching kitchens on campus. This is a great opportunity to get feedback from the Chef on your technique and presentation.

3. Help out at school.

There are many volunteer opportunities at public classes and events held on and off campus. As a volunteer, you can gather wisdom from the Chef instructors, be part of a real kitchen brigade, and practice interacting with the public.

4. Read.

An important part of Le Cordon Bleu education is a focus on technique. Classic French cooking techniques and a solid knowledge of ingredient interaction can be used in any international cuisine. Researching recipes that interest you and reading about culinary trends will help you develop your confidence.

5. Study with classmates.

Our students practice by reproducing exam situations. They time each other’s preparation, taste dishes, and challenge each other with a “white box” – a set of ingredients, previously unknown, which must be turned into a meal.

At Le Cordon Bleu, you will be learning cuisine, pastry, and baking from the best Chefs in the world!
