What’s so different about going back to school this year? This is something you have probably done about 12 times already. But no matter what school you’re attending, if you are going to university for the first time, this year will truly be different – and special.

The culture at a university is different, and so are the expectations. You now have a much greater responsibility for your own learning. Although you will be in class less, and probably have fewer tests and assignments than in high school, the work will be more challenging, come at you much faster and require a much high level of thinking.

There are a number of strategies you can follow that will help you succeed academically:

  1. Avoid procrastination – it is easier to keep up than it is to catch up on readings and assignments.
  2. Schedule – know when need to work on what. It will help you prioritize what is really important, both in and out of the classroom.
  3. Be aware of how you learn – Learning in university is much more self-guided. Discover the strategies that work best for you.
