Getting ready for the first day of university is always an exciting time of year. There is something special about shopping for new binders, notebooks, textbooks, pens, and pencils and discovering the newest style of book bag. Even trying to memorize your class schedule is an entertaining thing to do.

Along with excitement you might be a bit nervous, especially if this is your first time attending university! Well don’t worry, at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC the New Students Transitions team is working hard to make your first week at TRU a fun, exciting and smooth experience.

As a first year student, you’re encouraged to attend Jump Start and Orientation. Jump start is held every year on Labor Day (September 2, 2013). If you’re not one to endure long line-ups associated with the first week back to school, you can take advantage of the Jump Start event! Services for students such as Students Corner, TRU Students’ Union, the Bookstore, and IT Services will be open to help you get organized before classes start.

Orientation is the best way to become familiar with our campus, meet professors, interact with peers, receive a free t-shirt and TRU swag, and of course enjoy a free BBQ! This great event is held on September 3, 2013 from 8:00am – 3:00 pm; don’t forget to mark it down on your calendar!

Starting university for the first time is also a big change for your family, so this year TRU has organized a casual Family Orientation as a way for your parents, grandparents and siblings to see where you will be living and studying! Registration is free but limited so sign up early.

If you are looking to start university this September but haven’t applied, TRU continues to accept applications throughout the summer and admits students as space permits. Visit www.tru.ca/apply, to apply to TRU for just $26.00. Contact the TRU Welcome Centre with questions or inquiries, or to arrange a visit to campus. Phone 250-828-5006, email recruitment@tru.ca or go to www.tru.ca/moreinfo.
