The month of September means back to school for many students in Canada. If your plan is to embark on an educational “fresh-start” this September we have a few things that you should do right away to avoid getting overwhelmed at exam-time!

  1. Go to ALL Classes
This might seem obvious but come Monday morning at 7am when your alarm jolts you awake, getting out of bed will seem all but impossible. Attending classes can make or break your final grades. Teachers give test-taking hints, exam highlights (This WILL be on the next test), and proper notes in order to help you succeed. Students who fail to attend their classes are less likely to succeed; plain and simple.
  2. Take Solid Notes
Attending class is one thing, but paying attention and transcribing information in a way that is meaningful to you is another. Bring highlighters, coloured pens, white-out, whatever works for you, and ensure that you master the art of note-taking. This will be important in your career one day too.
  3. Make Friends in Class
Let’s face it, with all the stressful (as well as social) aspects students deal with at school, your immune system breaks down every once in a while and you might miss some classes. The best way to guarantee that you won’t miss out on anything important is to text your friend in class and ask them to pick up any handouts and to let you know of anything significant (like test-day changes).
  4. Review Your Notes Regularly
After all the effort to make your notes worth-while, you might as well review them a few times throughout the course of your class semester. This will help build on what you’re learning throughout your semester.
  5. Do the Assigned Readings
They’re boring, I know. But if there’s anything I learned in my post-secondary career, is that the readings almost ALWAYS show up on tests, paper topics and the like. Find a comfy spot in your house or favorite coffee shop and do this once a week. It will pay off later when you’re struggling with that 3000 word paper.

Vocational schools like Brighton College offer start dates all-year round.
