At Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, we train students to launch and grow their careers as cooks, pastry cooks, bakers and Chefs. We also believe success in the hospitality industry isn’t just about being able to make the perfect hollandaise (though it does help!). Here is some advice we share with our students on day one of their programs, encouraging them to make the most of their time at PICA:
  1. Treat your time at school as you would a job.

Presence and punctuality are attributes that are highly valued by our industry (and many others). We encourage our students to aim for perfect attendance studying at PICA – it’s a good work habit to have and also ensures you don’t miss anything during our intensive, hands-on programs.

  2. Get involved!

Students at PICA have the opportunity to participate in a number of events outside of the school – food festivals, gala events, fundraisers. It can make for a long day, but it’s a great way to get experience, learn about the industry and network with local Chefs.

  3. Attitude counts.

Kitchens quarters can be tight and teamwork is important – your fellow classmates (and down the road, your fellow cooks) often become your extended family! If you have a positive attitude and look at any challenge as a potential learning opportunity, you’ll be ‘adopted’ into your kitchen family who will be vested in your success as a cook and Chef.
