Even though your final year of high school is just about to start, it will be over before you know it.

Here are some tips to make the most of it:

  • Have fun!
Your last year of high school will be the most memorable. Try to find a balance between sports, clubs, friends, and schoolwork.
  • Do your homework
This is a good habit. Many students get good grades without doing homework in high school. This usually changes when they get to university. Information is given at a faster pace in university, so doing your homework becomes absolutely necessary.
  • Work hard
It’s not over yet! Getting good grades will help ensure that you get into the university you want and also helps with getting scholarships.
  • Apply for scholarships
University can be a big investment. Meet with your guidance counsellor and get a list of scholarships you can apply for. Make sure to check when the deadline is you don’t miss out!

Choosing a university

Everyone has different criteria, but here are some common things to look for:

  • Small class sizes
It’s easier to make friends and profs know your name. The average class size at UNB Fredericton is only 31.
  • Flexibility
Sometimes the program you graduate with isn’t the one you started with. It’s much easier to switch programs when they’re on the same campus. UNB has plenty of options- over 75 undergraduate and graduate programs!
  • Support
Wherever you go, you should have access to all kinds of support: financial, career and personal.

UNB has a Writing and Math Help Centre, career and personal counselling, a Student Accessibility Centre for students with disabilities (visible and invisible such as anxiety and ADHD), a financial aid office, and a Student Employment Centre. All of these services are included in your tuition.

Follow these tips and you’ll have a great final year in high school and will be well prepared for the next part of your academic journey!
