Books, schedules, classes, new professors – there’s a lot to think about in the first few weeks that you’re back at school. One of the things that may fall off your radar is maintaining healthy habits – until you get hit with a nasty bug just when your mid-terms are scheduled.

Follow our tips to stay as healthy as possible – even when you can’t think about anything but finding your next class.

Eat well

Yes, there’s lots of temptation on campus – from doughnuts and coffee from the campus Timmie’s to the ubiquitous pizza slices. There are a couple of ways to avoid the trap of the “Frosh 15” and bone-crushing caffeine crashes: either buy healthier food or pack your own lunch. It’s not hard to choose a fresh salad topped with chicken over a burger – and it’s even easier (and cheaper) to pack a sandwich and orange. Carry a refillable water bottle, and you’ll stay healthily hydrated too.

Exercise

Make time to go for a run, play a game of pick-up soccer, or take a bootcamp class – any physical activity that gets you sweating can help alleviate stress, as well as get you healthier overall. Humber has full-service gyms for students to use at all three campuses (included in your tuition), as well as recreational and varsity sports teams – chances are there’s an activity for you.

Keep an eye on your stress levels

Stress doesn’t have to be bad – but even fun stress like going out with friends takes its toll on your body, leaving you susceptible to headaches, colds and stomach complaints. Make sure you take time to relax and give your body time to recover from a whirlwind of activity – unplug from your smartphone, read a trashy book, go for a hike in the woods with a friend. (Humber’s Arboretum is a perfect spot to unwind.) If you feel constantly overwhelmed, sad, exhausted or have trouble sleeping, get help from the services that are available: for example, Humber has a health clinic as well as counselling services available free-of-charge to students.

Follow these tips to help make your transition back to school happy and healthy.
