Starting a new school year at a new school with new rules can seem a little intimidating. As students prepare to take their first ever university class, they undoubtedly have plenty of questions and uncertainties about how things will be different from high school. This year, new students at St. Mary’s University College in Calgary can take part in the first ever Student Boot Camp, designed to answer questions and whip students into studying and test taking shape, even before they step into their first class.

“The idea of this Boot Camp is to help students develop better study habits, test-taking skills, note taking and time management,” says Brianna Hart, Student Recruitment Officer at St. Mary’s. These skills will give students a bit of an edge before they start their semester.”

The Boot Camp will teach new students how to survive their first year of university and help them make the transition into a post-secondary environment from high school. Whether it is the social aspect of a new school, or learning to juggle a different course load, students will spend the day working with St. Mary’s staff and faculty to discover the skills needed to have a successful post-secondary career.

Students will learn about the resources available to them through the school and will be connected to the right people if they need assistance during their time at St. Mary’s. Student will also have a chance to get to know fellow first-year students, so relationships will be formed even before orientation the next day.
