Founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, the University of York opened in 1963 with just 230 students. In less than 50 years we have become one of the world's leading universities with over 16,000 students. International students form an integral part of the community on campus, and currently just over 20% of our students come from outside the UK. We currently have around 50 Canadian students at York studying undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research programmes.

There are now over 30 academic departments and research centres at York including Archaeology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics and Related Studies, Education, 18th Century Studies, Electronics, English and related literature, Health Sciences, History, History of Art, Mathematics, Hull York Medical School, Music, Language and Linguistic Science, York Law School, Philosophy, Physics, Politics, Psychology, Social Policy and Social Work, Sociology, Theatre Film and Television, Centre for Women’s Studies.

Located within walking distance of York city centre, our safe and attractive Heslington campus is home to our eight colleges and most of our departments. We also have several departments located in the city centre at the historic King's Manor. In recent years, our £750m campus expansion has seen the opening of seven new buildings, increasing our capacity for student numbers and providing more world-class facilities for the 21st century.

Jessica, MA Medieval Studies Graduate 2011

“I chose York because of the great international reputation of both the Centre for Medieval Studies and the Department of English. The CMS is a friendly community based outside the main campus, in the historic King's Manor in the centre of York. York itself is full of medieval architecture and historic records, making it a wonderful place to study history as well as a nice city to live in!”
