One of the best perks of being a university student is having a four-month summer break. Think about the possibilities of what those four months could be - head off on a European or tropical vacation, go golfing every day, or spend the four months catching up on sleep!

This sounds amazing but most students tend to work during the summer to pay for the next year of University. Well, at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC, we make working in the summer a fun and profitable experience.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of one of the most unique co-operative education (Co-op) programs in BC. Co-op is a way for students to gain practical, career related work experience in four, eight or twelve month work terms. What makes our Co-op program so unique is that we are the first and only university in BC to offer academic credits for optional Co-op. Students are not only getting paid and gaining invaluable work experience; they can also count their co-op experience as elective credit towards their degree!

Although Co-op is a ‘job’, students get paid to work for a company that they are interested in. Like the saying goes; it’s never work if you are doing something that you love!

Co-op is available to students in most degree and some diploma programs at TRU. For other programs where Co-op is not available, internships and practicums are provided for students to graduate with some form of hands on experience.

It’s not too late to apply to university for September 2013! TRU continues to accept applications for most programs throughout the summer and admits students as space permits.
