There are lots of ways to make the most of the summer break. If you’re not taking a class, consider using the summer to gain experience, make connections and bolster your resume.

You might consider:

A summer job: Whether you are looking for a job that relates to your chosen career path or one that will further develop your transferable and career-ready skills, this is an option that will enhance your resume and could help to pay for some of your education.

Internship and co-op opportunities: Many college programs have co-ops or internships built in to their curriculum that can be taken during the summer months.

Volunteering: By volunteering you get the opportunity to meet people in the field and connect with companies that will see firsthand what you can do. It also gives you the chance to test your skills and develop new skills that can help you with your education and career goals.

Even some volunteer positions may require you to submit a resume, so whether you are looking for a summer job, a co-op or a volunteer position, it pays to refine your job hunting skills.

If you need help, there are resources at your college that can assist. For example, for your job search, Seneca offers free drop-in resume critiques at multiple locations, as well as career counselling and testing services. Online resources are also available to help you through your application, the interview process, negotiating a salary and excelling on your first day on the job.
