Brighton CollegeFinding a job in B.C. can be pretty tough right now. As a recent graduate myself, I learned that there are a few ways to make up for a lack of “on-the-job experience” that every employer requires their potential hires to have! Here’s my top 4 ½ tips on how to find a job:

1. Attend resume building workshops:
Most schools (Brighton College included) have dedicated Employment Advisors who are there specifically to assist students with their job hunt. This includes revamping students’ resumes for job interviews too! Touching up your resume to be current and relevant only to the job you are applying for is a must because it shows your potential employer that you pay attention to detail.

2. Employment Advisors:
Again, establishing a solid relationship with your school’s employment advisor is a real asset that many students do not take advantage of. Do it!

3. Volunteering:
A good way to improve your resume is to take the time to volunteer your services to various causes. Take part in student unions at your school, event planning committees or even help out at larger events like Vancouver’s Sun Run.

4. Networking:
I think that networking can be divided into two sections (hence the 4 ½). Traditional networking (i.e. using your family and friends or attending your schools industry nights) is important to your job search because it usually allows you to create a first-hand connection with potential employers or people who might know potential employers in your field.
Using social media as a networking tool is the second kind of networking that finishes off this list. Tools such as LinkedIn are vital to your job search because of the way you can connect with head hunters in your field of interest. Linked In highlights your profile to potential employers if you note that you are looking for new opportunities!

With regular adherence to these tips your chances improve greatly. Add a little perseverance and you might just find yourself with your dream job!
