You fret and worry about receiving scholarships in a world where the best of the best are all competing for limited funding. However, fear not there are scholarships out there for everyone! Sure, there are the big and highly competitive academic scholarships but there are funding that do not place academics as the top priority in their evaluation criteria. There are awards for those who have strong leadership skills, who volunteer, are involved with sports, who participate in their community and much much more. The key is you may have to think outside the box to find these opportunities. The University of Lethbridge, School of Graduate Studies’ offers awards such as the Jacoba Vanden Brink Award for students who volunteer or the Tooker Gomber Award who looks for students who are engaged in their community.

Look to your community, church, sport associations or other organisations with which you are involved. When searching scholarship sites try using keyterms not based around your research but rather other aspects of your life. While in school always try to build up your CV with non-academic activies as you never know when it can pay off for you.
