Algoma UniversityStudents at Algoma University in St. Thomas may have one of the smallest first-year classes in the province, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a whole lot going on there.

Students in St. Thomas study in blocks, meaning that they take one course at a time, for three weeks, before moving to the next one. This means that courses can be taught anywhere, since students have no other classes to tie them to campus.

This year’s inaugural class has two opportunities to get outside the classroom to study. The first block of the program brought them to Sault Ste. Marie, to study History. Students got to participate in the main campus Frosh Week, and experience other highlights of Northern Ontario.

The second opportunity is in February, when the class will travel to Cuba for three weeks for a course in Colonial Studies. Students will stay at an all-inclusive resort, attend classes each morning, and experience Cuban history and culture.

Next year, the Omnicom School of Languages partners with Algoma University to offer ESL to international students in St. Thomas. Upon successful completion of their program, these students will have the opportunity to transfer directly into a university level academic program. Language students studying in St. Thomas will engage with the community of St. Thomas, attending local events and volunteering with community organizations. These students will also get their chance to travel, going to Toronto to see sights such as the CN Tower and the Art Gallery of Ontario, and visiting Canadian landmarks such as Niagara Falls and historic Quebec.

Whether working towards your degree or learning a new language, studying at Algoma University in St. Thomas is full of adventure!
