Advice from Lakehead Students

Being active in university life and the community you live in is a vital component in your university education. There is no better advice than what Lakehead University students could give you, so we asked a few of them why and how they become involved, and here is what they had to say:

Student Life
“Outside of class I am very active because I want to balance out my studies. I enjoy going to the gym (which is included in my student fees). In the winter I go snowboarding and snow shoeing. In the summer I enjoy hiking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, travelling, and playing soccer and volleyball. I can do it all either on or close to campus.”
–Allison Winmill, Forestry student

“Student life at Lakehead can only be described as awesome. I'm a part of the Equestrian team. I have met countless new friends and get to have new experiences that I would not get if I didn't involve myself. For example, I have been riding horses for many years, but never entered a horse show until now. I got the chance to travel with my teammates to Minnesota and Wisconsin to compete.”
–Nerhys Hall, Music student

Why Get Involved
“Campus life at Lakehead is amazing. There's a large variety of clubs, sports, and activities for everyone's own unique interests. There are also lots of events organized by Residence, The Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) and other clubs, which are designed for the same goal: to help students identify and relate with their school community.”
–Anthony Jeethan, Pyschology and Biology student

“The best part about getting involved at the school is that it was so easy. Everyone was extremely welcoming and truly wanted to create an enriching environment at the school. It was so important to me to get outside my tiny bubble of friends and meet a variety of people from different backgrounds. Doing so, I have become a Director of Lakehead Student Alumni and a Student Ambassador to Lakehead. I have to do a lot of planning to balance this and my school work, but it’s always worth it.”
–SnehaMakkar, Arts & Science / Concurrent Education Student

How to Get Involved

“There is also an exclusive group for students interested in Biology: Lakehead’s Association of Biology Students or LABS. Throughout the year we hosted a wide range of events – from an evening of watching “The Big Bang Theory” to playing laser tag on a weekend. This group allows me to meet other students in the same program as well as Faculty and Staff members in Biology.”
–Megan Westlund, Biology student

“Because I loved residence so much I wanted help provide other students with a similar experience so I became a house president in second year and now in third year I am a resident assistant.”
–Jess Warden, Kinesiology, Concurrent Education student

Services and Resources

“My student career was enriched by being a member of the LEAD volunteer program through the Student Success Centre (SSC). The SSC is an office staffed with amazing people to assist students with all their questions and make the university a more understandable place to live, learn and explore.”
–Sarah Scott, Natural Sciences student

“I used many hours of the free math tutoring service, which I found very helpful. I also took advantage of the writing center that helped me polish the essays and assignments that I had to write, as well as the Student Success Center whose seminars and supportive staff answered all my questions about my course and program. University is a huge step after high school, but everything about Lakehead made the transition easier and my first year memorable.”
–Jocelyn Bel, Applied Bio-Molecular Science student
