Algoma UniversityAn international experience is a critical part of getting the most out of your education and your university experience. Algoma University has embraced Internationalism, by steadily increasing its international student body to 20% of the undergraduate population, and is committed to sending students abroad to study.

So how does Study Abroad work?

The Study Abroad program allows students in their second or third year of study to spend a semester studying at a partner university in another country. These studies could be subject specific or could be composed of a variety of elective courses to be counted towards the student’s degree. Spending a semester studying abroad doesn’t lengthen the amount of time to complete a degree. Students who choose to study abroad still graduate in 3 – 4 years. You don’t have to apply to study abroad programs when you apply to university but you should start thinking about it. Students who are interested in studying abroad are typically screened in their first year based on grades and an interview process.

Where can you study?

If Study Abroad is something that interests you, you will want to look into which partner institutions are available to you at your chosen domestic institution. At Algoma University we have been busy adding partner institutions over the past few years. We are happy to say that Algoma students can study just about anywhere in the world. Popular destinations for Study Abroad students are Australia, France, Lithuania and Brazil.

Why should I Study Abroad?

Living and studying abroad is an unbelievable opportunity that you may never have again. You get a true taste for the culture living in a foreign country for 4 months. International experience is something employers are looking for, and increasingly demanding. If you are interested in working for a multinational corporation the experience you gain living overseas will give you a leg up on others when competing for jobs. It’s also very affordable. Students who study abroad pay domestic tuition fees and are still eligible to receive scholarships or financial aid they would have received otherwise. Fine Arts student Christina Carter sums her study abroad experience up well. “I had first-time experiences ranging from simple things like swimming in the ocean, or riding a bicycle, to things I could do only in Japan, like wearing a kimono and eating potentially-deadly blowfish - it was pretty tasty, too!” said Christina. If study abroad isn’t something you have been thinking about you should definitely consider it. You’ll come out of it better prepared for your career, more cultured as a person, and with a set of friends from all over the globe that will last a lifetime.
