University of GuelphMaking sense of your post-secondary applications can make even the most confident student anxious, but creating – and sticking to – a well-thought out strategy can take some of the pressure off as you go through the application process.

Do your homework
Most post-secondary institutions will list program pre-requisites on their websites or in their viewbooks. Making sure that you’ve taken the appropriate courses to be considered for your programs of choice will ensure that your application won’t be overlooked once transcripts are reviewed by admission committees. Also, become familiar with admission policies and find out if there are any additional forms or portfolios that need to be submitted directly to the admission offices. Depending on the program you apply to, the submission of additional information may be required.

Take a field trip
If possible, try to visit the schools you’ll be applying to. Remember, not only will you be studying here, but you’ll be living here too! Each campus has its own “feel”, and it’s important that you feel comfortable in order to excel academically. Most campuses offer open houses or campus tours which will give you the chance to see the features of the campus and ask questions to current students and faculty.

Stay on track
Create a calendar with important deadline dates throughout the application process. Many schools will offer additional resources, like calendars and checklists or even online chats to help stay on top of application, scholarship, and residence application deadlines.

Take ownership
The best application strategy is to be involved and take ownership of your application. Remember, it’s your future!
