University of Regina The start of September is a very exciting time. It’s the start of the last year in high school and the start of the ever popular question “So what are your plans after high school?” Did you know that students with a university education had an employment rate of 88% - well above that of those with just high school (61.4%) (www.td.com); this also translates into a higher income, 78% higher for university graduates (2006 Census).

Where to begin! Start by asking yourself some questions. What subjects do I like? What interests do I have? Think about your favourite subjects or activities. If there is more than one, that’s okay, you don’t have to have all the answers right now.

Once you have an idea of what interests you or to look for ideas, hit the Web. There are a number of search engines to help you search for programs and universities – schoolfinder.com is a great site to help you start your journey. If you know of a few schools that you are interested in, go directly to their Web sites. Most universities have special Web sites for prospective students (or future students).

The fall is also when recruiters/admission counsellors hit the road. University recruiters visit high schools and career/education fairs across the country to speak with students and provide information about their programs and services. They are armed with materials to help with your research as well as invitations to come and visit the campus. Check with your guidance office for more information.

Don’t forget to visit the campus. Campus visits help determine if a school is a good fit for you. Most universities have daily campus tour programs and or Open Houses– for example; the University of Regina hosts UR Connected on October 19 and 20, for more information visit www.uregina.ca/futurestudent

Good Luck!
