Carleton UniversityThe start of the school year is a great opportunity to enhance your learning and study skills. The Learning Support Strategists at Carleton University’s Learning Support Services offer the following suggestions to improve your study skills.

Understanding your learning style will help you to understand how you acquire knowledge. There are 3 different styles of learning: visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Knowing how you learn best will make studying more effective and less frustrating.

Time management is a fundamental skill which involves setting realistic goals, breaking tasks into smaller pieces, prioritizing, and following through with plans.Time should also be allocated to preparing for class by completing all readings and reviewing notes from previous weeks before class. These strategies help with the retention of the material and remaining up-to-date in class.

Students are encouraged to use SQ3R method, where the reader surveys their chapter before reading, formulate questions while reading, reviewing text with the questions in mind, verifying that all questions have been answered and then recite each answer and record them. This method is helpful for self-testing, which is a great way to prepare for exams by identifying which course materials you may need further assistance with.

When in doubt about course material and assignments students are encouraged to seek the help of their professors and TAs by asking questions after class, visiting them during office hours and via email.

A more comprehensive list of best study skills practices will be available shortly on the Carleton University website. Come back and check us out on in the upcoming months for more expert advice on our top 10 strategies here or follow us on twitter!
