Thompson Rivers UniversityThe first few weeks of university are an exciting time for you as a new student. Moving into residence, attending orientation, buying books, getting your student card, organizing your class schedule and attending those first classes, where you discover there’s a lot of reading and studying ahead of you.

It’s important to have good study habits, because university progresses quickly and before you know it you will need to be hitting the books to get ready for midterms (yes! they come up that quick.

However, at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC we believe that good study habits in your first year involves more than just hitting the books; we also encourage you to make time to study your “student experience options” in the first few weeks of classes.

Make time between classes to explore all of the other great opportunities available to you as a TRU student through resources such as information sessions and fairs. At TRU you should be learning about Studying Abroad (incorporating an international exchange into your degree), Co-operative Education (paid work experience in your given field of study), the TRU Library (seminars on studying and how to use the library’s resources), student clubs, recreation and intramural sports, volunteer opportunities and more.

These are all learning experiences and life experiences that you can incorporate into your degree at TRU. It’s all about creating your own unique university experience and having the time of your life. Studying doesn’t have to be boring! Our advice is don’t make assumptions on what you like or don’t like, or what you can or can’t do as part of your program. Study all of the opportunities first and then decide; you might discover something exciting that you never knew existed, and when you graduate in four or five years, your resume will include far more than just the name of a degree.

For those of you in your final year of high school, TRU begins accepting applications to Fall 2013 for all programs, as of October 1, 2012. Application information can be found on our home page, www.tru.ca. Contact the Welcome Centre at or 250.828.5006 for more information about campus visits, program information and help with applications.
