Centennial CollegeYou’ve been a student for years, so you think you know how to study well. You could probably write a book on the subject – if you could get around to it. And that’s part of the problem: self-discipline and good habits can be elusive, especially when you’re new to a big campus with lots of distractions. Get acquainted with these expert-approved study tips.

1. Create a quiet study nook

You should have a desk and a comfortable chair, good lighting, a month-at a-glance calendar, a dictionary and all the supplies you need. Choose a quiet room that is free of distractions such as a TV. It should not be a place where you routinely do other things, like prepare dinner.

2. Studying takes many forms

Studying includes more than just doing your homework. You will need to go over your notes from class – labeling, editing and making sure you understand them. Reading assignments are equally important. Don’t put them off just because there’s no written work to do.

3. Schedule your precious time

Write down all the things you have to do: classes, work hours, meals, family and recreation time. Then schedule your study time, making sure you leave time to review every day. Schedule a larger review once a week and an overall review once a month. Avoid long study periods. Several short study sessions are usually more effective.

4. Do as much of your studying during the day as you can

What takes you an hour to do during the day may take you an hour and a half at night, due to fatigue. Spare time between classes during the day is a great time for quality studying if you can find a quiet corner on campus.

5. Form a study group

Research shows that students who study with a buddy routinely get better grades. Teaching a concept or new idea to someone else is a sure way for you to understand it, too. But stay focused! Studying with a partner can sometimes become too social.
