First year of university is an exciting time: Frosh week, new friends, new classes, and new things to learn. It can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. With a little preparation and a good start, you can have a successful first year. Here are three tips for incoming students from a recent Tyndale University College graduate.

  • Talk to financial aid: Finances can cause a lot of stress for some students. The people in financial aid are there to help take that stress away. Did you know that 80% of financial aid is not given away because nobody applies for it? Even if you don’t think you qualify, you should apply.
  • Talk to your faculty advisor: At Tyndale, every student has a professor in their discipline as an advisor. They will help you with course selection, academic advice, and planning your future. I had a tight schedule with few electives and my faculty advisor helped me plan my semesters so that I would graduate when I wanted to.
  • Start early: Register for courses early, do your homework early, and make friends. It may seem like a no-brainer but procrastination can wreck a semester. To have your best semester, don’t put anything off, including making friends. Everybody is in the same boat as you—they are all in a new place, possibly feeling apprehensive and lonely. People want to make friends at university so it is easier than you may think. These friendships may last for the rest of your life.
