Back to school might seem the same every year – until your school changes from a high school to a university. And then it’s a completely different experience!

You now go back to school to new professors, in some cases a new city or country, and to students who you have yet to meet.

Back to school shopping becomes a little different, too. The University of Waterloo’s housing website provides tips on what to pack for your move to residence.

At Waterloo, first-year students go through Orientation before classes begin. It is a week-long affair where students are introduced to their faculty, residence, academics, and social aspects of university. It’s a chance to meet new people and make friends, many of whom you see again in your classes. Waterloo’s Orientation includes academic and social events and ends with North America’s largest toga party!

Going from togas to textbooks might be hard for some when classes begin but it’s important to not lose yourself to procrastination and parties. Many schools have a Student Success Office to support you. They provide advice and workshops on test preparation, stress management, and more.

Clubs are also a great way to make the most out of your university experience. Going to school in a completely different environment might be overwhelming but if you get a great start in first year you are bound to get the most of your university experience.
