Seneca CollegeIt’s almost back-to-school time and that means many students will be making their new (academic) year resolutions; better grades, greater involvement in college activities, and meeting new people.

The first thing new and returning students should do is figure out how much of their summer savings they should set aside to be financially comfortable. A budget calculator is really helpful for this as it’ll give an estimation of how much you’re likely to spend on your course materials and necessities. Checking out the bookstore is also useful as you can find out how much you can save by picking up your course books used, and get money back on old books through Book Buyback days.

The next step is to get involved. By getting involved in the different organizations, groups, and events which comprise college life, students are able to meet and network with new and interesting people.

A great start for new students is to attend Orientation. For new students, campus tours and the college survival tips offered during Orientation are invaluable. Returning students can also participate by becoming Orientation Leaders. Information about the various clubs and associations, college sports, interacting with fellow students and discovering the resources available means that Orientation has something for everyone.

By keeping financial stress to a minimum and by building social support, not only can a student achieve their new academic year resolutions, but can also make the most of their year.
