Whether you are in your first or last year of studies, or earning a degree or a trade certification, every student should try to gain some industry experience before they graduate.

Admittedly, getting a job while you’re still a student can be quite challenging. For one, employers can be hesitant to hire those who are not yet certified. Secondly, it can become really difficult to juggle school and work schedules, not to mention any other daily responsibilities you have on your plate.

Luckily, Mohawk College is increasingly prioritizing experiential learning, giving students more opportunities to get hands-on work experience while completing their academic programs. Here are a few ways Mohawk students can gain an industry advantage:

  • Co-operative programs are designed so that on-the-job experience is actually a part of the program requirements, thus students alternate between academic and work semesters. Typically, work semesters are paid, and really give students an opportunity to put their knowledge into practice. Mohawk offers co-op programs in a wide of disciplines, some of which can be done on a full- or part-time basis.
  • Internships are short-term training opportunities offered to those who have a passion for but little to no experience in a particular industry. Mohawk has formed partnerships with several corporate leaders and public organizations to facilitate the internship process for both domestic and international students. Keep in mind that internships can be done at any time, and anyone can apply for an internship, even if your program of study does not have the internship option.
  • Summer jobs are a great way to earn money while school is out, and they also give students a chance to put their book smarts to the test. Mohawk offers students and alumni employment guidance and advice, which helps students learn everything about getting hired, including how to look for a job, present a resume, and prepare for an interview.

Regardless of which type of experiential learning a student chooses, he or she will be able to get a closer look at what their future career will look like, and will also get a chance to work alongside Industry professionals who will guide them through the process. Ultimately, students with work experience will definitely have an advantage when it comes time to launch their careers.
