The first year of veterinary medical school is often daunting for students. The exams are challenging, the coursework’s intensive, and the professors are often demanding. St. George’s University, a pioneer in global medical education, understands that there is an adjustment period for some students during their first year. In an effort to provide students with the tools needed for a successful academic career, St. George’s University offers the Academic Enhancement Program (AEP). The AEP, implemented by the school’s Department of Educational Services (DES), is a retention and tutorial for students in their first year of the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Students are placed into the AEP by the University’s Board of Admissions for a variety of reasons, including a large gap in between undergraduate and medical school, lower MCAT scores, or a low undergraduate GPA. The AEP includes review group sessions, personal advising, and access to other DES programs as needed, to provide additional guidance and resources for first-year students. Tutors are also appointed to students on an as-needed basis by full-time faculty in the Department of Educational Services.

St. George’s University’s Department of Educational Services teaches students how to learn, and teachers how to teach. This unusual and highly effective faculty is the largest on campus, and is an important component of St. George’s University students’ and graduates’ successes. Close to 100% of the University’s students avail themselves of the support.

St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine offers the pre-veterinary medical program and the veterinary medical program, which includes the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. For clinical studies, the program is affiliated with two of the seven veterinary schools in the United Kingdom, 23 of the 28 veterinary schools in the United States, and schools in Canada, Ireland, and Australia. The School offers the stand-alone degree DVM, as well as dual degrees such as the DVM/MPH.
