Applying for scholarships can mean the difference between having to pay the full cost of attending university and potentially not having to pay a penny. Entrance scholarships are the simplest awards to find and apply for as most universities offer them. Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops BC awards more than $300,000 a year in entrance scholarships, ranging anywhere from $1,000 - $20,000.

So what does getting a scholarships looking like, and how does it affect your tuition fees? Take a look at the cost for one year of tuition fees at TRU (Bachelor of Arts) for a full time student. The average cost of tuition is about $3,680 for the year – that’s two semesters or eight months of university.

That’s actually less than at many other universities, but when you apply and qualify for a scholarship the amount you would have to pay could be only $2,680 (with a $1,000 scholarship), or $180 (with a $3,500 scholarship) or even $0 each year ( with a 4-year, $20,000 scholarship). The extra money not spent on tuition can then be used to pay for student fees, books, housing and food.

Now just think, if you don’t apply you will never win a scholarship and you will be paying the full $3,680 each year. TRU scholarships also recognize students who not only achieve good marks, but also those who stand out in leadership and who are involved in the community.

In addition to scholarships, TRU offers bursaries to students who may not have the academic qualifications for scholarships but can show that they have financial need. In total last year, TRU gave over $1 million dollars in scholarships and bursaries to new and returning students. Visit the Financial Aid & Awards website to learn more about scholarships & how to apply.
