The Veterinary Mentor Scholarship Turns Students' Dreams Into Reality

A would-be veterinary student already working for a practicing veterinarian in some capacity may be eligible for The Veterinary Mentor Scholarship from St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. Because St. George’s leaders understand that the cost of a veterinary medical education may, at times, overshadow a student’s dream of becoming a veterinarian, the University instituted this Veterinary Mentor Scholarship as a way of helping to turn students’ dreams into reality. The scholarship recipients are nominated by a practicing veterinarian who feels their protégé has shown academic excellence and a proven dedication to the veterinary profession. The Veterinary Mentor Scholarship program awards partial tuition scholarships for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program.

To apply, the Mentor must first fill out an application documenting their nominee’s dedication by answering a series of questions, including detailing a specific instance where their nominee has gone above and beyond the call of his/her duties in the care of animals—demonstrating fortitude, determination, and passion for the profession. If their nominee is chosen for the scholarship, the University will fly the Veterinary Mentor to Grenada at the beginning of term to witness the student’s participation in the White Coat Ceremony, which formally marks induction into the profession.

Students awarded the scholarship will spend the first three years in Grenada studying basic veterinary science, as well as spending time assisting at the University’s on-campus small animal clinic and large animal resource facility. They will then have the option to complete their clinical studies at some of the world’s top academic environments. The university holds 29 affiliations with international veterinary schools, including 23 out of 28 veterinary schools in the United States, two of the seven veterinary schools in the United Kingdom, and schools in Canada, Ireland, and Australia.

Since its inception in 1999, St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine has trained more than 700 veterinarians—the majority of whom are in private practice in countries around the world. Every year the School of Veterinary Medicine awards over a dozen Veterinary Mentor Scholarships as a way of giving back to the veterinary profession that has generously embraced St. George’s University and its educational mission.
