Lakeland student Brooke Lawes receives the Cassandra Logozar Memorial Award presented by Lakeland’s Deanna Krys, staff advisor to the college’s Stock Dog Club. Students in the Stock dog Club support the award with several annual fundraising projects.

This year, 814 Lakeland student recipients will benefit from a total of $733,421 in bursaries, awards and scholarships. That’s a lot of cash put back in students’ pockets and the idea of helping others to have the same relief has propelled Lakeland students into action.

One of the most popular scholarships for new Lakeland students is the Academic Excellence Scholarships. Valued at $3,500, $2,500 or $1,500, these scholarships are granted to incoming students who have a Grade 11 average between 85 and 100 per cent when they apply to Lakeland’s university transfer, environmental sciences, agribusiness, business or educational assistant programs.

Lakeland students have also become engaged to create several new scholarships. The new Pay It Forward Paramedic Award is just one example of an award created by a student and has gained support from her classmates as well as alumni, instructors, and provincial and national organizations. Students in Lakeland’s animal health technology and veterinary medical assistant programs, as well as the college’s

Stock Dog Club, have also taken the lead to create and support seven student scholarships.

While scholarships recognize student achievement, they also play an important role to attracting quality people to professions. Paramedic student Alex Barkley explains.

“Becoming a paramedic has always been my goal but the financial burden of going to school is significant,” says Barkley. “More scholarships and awards for students will provide more relief and will also encourage more opportunities for scholastic endeavours.”
