'Experience' is What Connects Education to Careers

It was not that long ago that making plans to attend university was not normally connected to what the future held as a career. Today, however, students and parents are not so shy about asking universities how specific programs will open doors to career opportunities.

The answer should be the “experiences” that students can embrace as part of attending university; experiences which not only enhance the specifics of what they are learning, but also helps them to answer the most common question asked by potential employers today – so, what else have you done ?

Taking advantage of real-world experiences that can lead to that dream career is what Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC wants student to make a priority. Don’t just come here for a degree, TRU tells students, come here and “create your own experience” by getting involved in the multitude of opportunities that allow you to graduate with a resume that answers that employers’ question.

The reality is that a majority of students still don’t know where their career path will lead them when they finish high school, and that’s OK. The Welcome Centre at TRU works closely with prospective students to explore and understand both the programs and the experiences open to them, and how they can lead to career options in the future.

TRU offers numerous opportunities for students to gain real-world experience and practical hands on knowledge. The university is also one of the few that formally recognizes such experiences, so you can prove to your future boss that you actually have the experience and expertise your resume claims.

While most students will assume “experience” is only related to work opportunities, through co-operative education (which TRU offers in many degree programs), the reality is that TRU offers many other experiences that go far beyond spending time on a job.

TRU is a global campus, and students are encouraged, and formally recognized for global and multi-cultural experiences that can range from volunteering to spend one or more semesters somewhere else in the world, through the large Study Abroad program. There are also international field schools, leadership programs, amazing opportunities for undergraduate research, community-based practicums and internships, and many more ways to experience learning beyond the classroom.

As for those who already think they know their career path, don’t be surprised if you change your mind once you are here. There’s a chance you will discover you actually enjoy the experiences of a different career path more, and want to change your area of study. At TRU, that’s also something we say is OK. TRU is still accepting applications for many of our programs that start in September 2012. Visit www.tru.ca/apply to apply to TRU for only $25.50.
